2018 Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT Review

Image
The Suzuki V-Strom 650 has been a very popular name in Western markets, and there's a considerable fan following ever since its introduction in 2004. In India though, Suzuki has only introduced it now, in 2018, as the new Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT ABS . And we get only the top-spec trim - with tubeless tyres on wire-spoke wheels with ABS and traction control. Now, it may have full-size ADV-bike styling, but the V-Strom 650 isn't really a hard-core off-road bike. Why it's loved internationally is not because of its go-anywhere credentials, but more because it's a practical, functional and value-for-money touring motorcycle which is quite the reliable machine. It can be your daily ride, your weekend date and even your occasional long distance touring companion. So, at Rs. 7.46 lakh (ex-showroom) what does the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT offer then? Ural Showcases Electric Motorcycle Concept

Image
Russian motorcycle manufacturer Ural has showcased a new fully electric concept, complete with a sidecar. All Ural motorcycles have a sidecar as standard fitment. While the concept is based on the Ural cT, but instead of the boxer-twin engine, this model uses an electric motor which has been designed by Zero Motorcycles of California, USA. Another California based company called ICG has designed the prototype and we believe that the testing and evaluation phase is currently on. The electric motor on the Ural is a Zero Z-Force motor which makes 45 kW and pumps out about 110 Nm of peak torque. There are two batteries installed, which are the ZF13.0 and the ZF6.5, which together provide 19.5 kWh of battery power. The approximate range on the Ural Electric bike is about 165 kilometres and it has a top speed of 140 kmph. (There is no confirmation whether the Ural Electric will go into production or not) As of now, there is no word from Ural saying whether the concept will ever go into p...

World's First Completely 3D Printed Bike Unveiled

NOWLAB and 3D printer manufacturer, BigRep have joined hands to develop the world's first completely 3D printed e-motorcycle, the NERA. The name itself is derived from the slogan "New Era", which is what the 3D-printed motorcycle claims to usher in. Everything on the NERA is made from additive manufacturing technology (better known as 3D printing), except the electronics. The tyres, touted to be airless, are 3D-printed as well, along with the frame, bodywork and suspension of the NERA. But this is not a real production model. The NERA is just a two-wheeled advertisement for 3D printer maker BigRep and its consultancy group NOWLAB. "The NERA combines several innovations developed by NOWLAB, such as the airless tyre, functional integration and embedded sensor technology," said Daniel Buning, Co-Founder and Managing Director of NOWLAB. "This bike and our other prototypes push the limits of engineering creativity and will reshape AM technology as we know it....

Norton Superlight Road-Legal Racer Launched

Image
Norton Motorcycles has unveiled the new Norton Superlight 650, a road-legal race version of the Atlas 650 twin roadsters which were unveiled some time ago. The Norton Superlight has carbon fibre bodywork, carbon wheels and a single-sided swingarm. And while the two Norton Atlas 650 twins - the Norton Atlas Nomad and Norton Atlas Ranger has the same 650 cc parallel-twin engine putting out 84 bhp of maximum power and 68 Nm of peak torque, the Superlight dishes out 105 bhp of power and 75 Nm of peak torque, and the engine spins up to 12,500 rpm. And thanks to the carbon fibre bodywork, it tips the scales at just 158 kg. And while the Atlas 650s use a steel tube frame, the Superlight, whose main job will be to win races, uses a lightweight aluminium tubed design. An optional titanium race pipe sheds 6 kg more over the standard weight and also bumps up the power by approximately 6 bhp, but it's not homologated for road use. The Superlight also uses top-end superbike components, includi...

2019 Triumph Street Scrambler First Ride Review

Image
The Triumph Street Scrambler is the 'scrambler' version of the bestselling Triumph Street Twin . And so far, the Street Scrambler has had the same engine, suspension and chassis as the Street Twin. The only differences were the spoked wheels with dual-purpose rubber, and a larger, 19-inch front wheel, and the side-mounted 'scrambler-style' exhaust. For 2019 though, the Street Scrambler gets some more off-road capability, and although it still shares its 900 cc Bonneville High Torque engine with the Street Twin, the tuning is different, and there are some other changes in the 2019 Street Scrambler as well, to make it more off-road capable. And we spent some time riding the upcoming 2019 Triumph Street Scrambler in Portugal to see exactly how different it is.
