Two-Wheeler Sales January 2020: Suzuki Volumes Decline For The First Time In 41 Months
Suzuki Motorcycle India has reported a sale of 65,402 units (domestic + exports) in January 2020, registering degrowth of 5.4 per cent, as compared to 69,162 units sold during the same month last year. The two-wheeler manufacturer had been able to buck the trend for the longest time and was one of the few two-wheeler makers to post a hike in sales figures despite the overall slowdown in the auto sector over the past year. While the sales drop has been marginal, it does indicate at a lean period for the company as it transitions from BS4 to BS6 range of vehicles.
Commenting on the sales performance, Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd. said, "January 2020 is the first month in the last 41 consecutive months where the market sentiment has arrested our growth in the domestic market. On a cumulative basis, however, we have registered a 7.2 per cent increase in our domestic sales. We attribute this growth to the customer orientation demonstrated by our dealer network along with our performance-oriented products translating into higher customer trust. We are confident that we will return to our earlier growth trend this month again."
Suzuki's domestic sales stood at 56,013 for the month of January 2020, as compared to 63,209 units in January 2019, a drop of nearly 11 per cent. However, the company's year-to-date sales have remained positive at 681,794 units between April 2019 and January 2020. For the same period last fiscal, the brand's year-to-date sales stood at 614,845 units.
Suzuki is currently working on transitioning to BS6 norms and started the process with the Access 125 scooter in December 2019. The bike maker will update its motorcycle range next to the stringent emission regulations, and it also has a host of new products lined up for launch. The company is also participating in the 2020 Auto Expo this week, which promises a host of new announcements from the two-wheeler maker.
