Royal Enfield Recalls 15,200 Motorcycles In Overseas Markets

Royal Enfield has announced a recall on 15,200 motorcycles across several overseas markets to fix a problem in the braking system in three of the brand's high-end models. According to a statement by Royal Enfield, a brake caliper corrosion related issue has been discovered in a very small number of motorcycles in some specific countries. Upon investigation, it was found out that this corrosion is brought about by sustained, long-term exposure to riding on roads treated with certain salts, or a combination of salts, to prevent formation of ice during winter.

The corrosion causes damage to the brake caliper piston bore and assemblies, and can result in unusual braking sound, increased brake drag, and may impact braking action. While this issue has been reported only in a small number of cases, Royal Enfield has decided to undertake a proactive, safety-related service action on the Interceptor 650, Continental GT 650 and Himalayan motorcycles sold across geographies where certain salts are used to treat roads, and can potentially cause damage to the brake caliper assemblies.

The recall has also affected the Royal Enfield Himalayan sold in certain overseas markets

"This is a precautionary service intervention, and will be undertaken across the UK, the rest of Europe and Korea. With immediate effect, around 15,200 motorcycles sold in these markets will be called in for inspection, cleaning and part replacement, if required. In a later phase of the service action, as a preventive measure, the caliper assemblies on these motorcycles will be replaced with the improved part, before the end of this year," the statement from Royal Enfield said.

While Royal Enfield has not specified the nature of the problem, and why the corrosion may occur, it may be recalled that brake manufacturer Brembo had issued a global recall on its braking systems, more specifically on brake pads due to a high concentration of nickel. That recall on Brembo brakes has already affected several motorcycles across brands, including Triumph, Ducati and Aprilia. While Royal Enfield has not specified that the recall may be linked to the global Brembo recall, it may be pertinent to point out that the Brembo recall is also related to similar corrosion on the calipers, and all three Royal Enfield models affected by the latest recall come equipped with ByBre brakes, Brembo's Indian-made brand. We have reached out to Royal Enfield if the recall is in any way related to Brembo's global recall, and if there's a chance any of the bikes sold in India will also be affected by the issue.

Zongshen Cyclone RX6 Based On Norton 650 Nearing Completion

While there still doesn't seem to be a buyer for iconic British brand Norton Motorcycles which went into administration in January this year, the firm's 650 cc parallel-twin seems to be finding life in China. While Norton apparently sold off the engine rights of its 961 engine to China's Jinglang just before the brand went into administration, the deal for the 650 cc engine was finalized way back in 2017 with Chinese giant Zongshen. Brixton 1200 To Rival Triumph Bonneville T120

A 1200 cc modern classic with similar design lines as Triumph's iconic Bonneville series, has reportedly been cleared for production. The bike was showcased as a concept at last year's EICMA motorcycle show, and from the looks of it, this is a model developed in China with the Triumph Bonneville T120 in its sights. The Brixton brand though is part of Austria's KSR Group, which imports bikes from several Chinese manufacturers, including CF Moto. And while the new Bonneville rival will be manufactured in China, the design and engineering has been created at KSR's design centre in Krups, Austria.
